CRG Defense AeroVox drone communication system demonstrated at U.S. border

Aerovox demonstration
CRG Defense was invited by drone manufacturer Draganfly to participate in a demonstration of AeroVox at the U.S. border in Arizona

CRG Defense’s AeroVox system was recently showcased in Cochise County, AZ, where local law enforcement and federal partners are expanding their use of advanced unmanned systems to strengthen border security and public safety.

AeroVox is a two-way communication payload that gives first responders and tactical teams the ability to communicate clearly and directly from the air. CRG Defense was invited by drone manufacturer Draganfly to participate in a demonstration at the Cochise County Drone Summit. The demonstration highlighted how AeroVox enhances situational awareness for teams operating across large, remote, and often dangerous terrain.

The border region’s vast landscape and rugged desert conditions make rapid detection and response essential. Additionally, lack of cell coverage makes communication difficult. To meet these challenges, the sheriff’s office has been collaborating with Draganfly over the past year on a new line of long-endurance hybrid-electric drones.

For the demonstration, CRG Defense integrated its AeroVox payload onto one of Draganfly’s large, unmanned aircraft systems. By combining a built-in background noise eliminating processor with a high-quality directional microphone and a powerful loudspeaker, AeroVox allows users to deliver instructions, ask questions, and receive real-time responses without landing the aircraft. For units operating in fast-changing or risky environments, that capability can make a critical difference.

AeroVox installed on a Draganfly drone
The CRG Defense’s AeroVox payload is designed to be drone agnostic, working with any off-the-shelf drones that can carry up to 2 kg (4.4 lbs)

AeroVox also offers technical performance tailored to mission needs. The system weighs under two kilograms and integrates with a wide range of drone platforms, supporting operations such as search and rescue, crisis and hostage negotiation, and emergency response. With a speech transmission index of 0.6 or higher and sound pressure levels exceeding 80 decibels at 10 meters, AeroVox provides clarity even in noisy environments or over long distances. These features make the payload a valuable tool for agencies seeking to strengthen communication, improve safety, and expand the operational impact of their unmanned aircraft systems.

Cochise County leadership, government officials, media, and other attendees from as far away as Ireland expressed excitement about the emerging capabilities, citing the potential for both operational impact and lifesaving outcomes.
